The Fusion - 3 episode miniseries

The Fusion

The Fusion is a 3 episode miniseries produced entirely by AMOB in which we reveal everything about the design, conception and automation of the impressive project - CH 320 CNC, a hydraulic tube bending machine with a length of around 13.5m and several toolsets.

Now available online, the first episode is truly fascinating as we learn how AMOB team welcomed this project and the challenges that arose throughout the development process. An insight provided by Diogo Santos, one of the many members of the project department involved in the conception of this tube bending machine.

The project department is responsible for understanding the machine specifications from the sales department, what the customer’s needs are and ensuring that all these requirements are met with rigor and accuracy.

AMOB has developed its CH series for the constantly increasing demands in the market. CH is a single stack machine, designed for a wide range of industries. It is available in the full CNC version, in which all three axis are automatic and also includes spring back compensation and 3D simulation with anti-collision technology.

“As soon as we received the request from the sales department for this new machine – CH 320 – as there was already an older model with fewer capabilities, it was a good opportunity to improve the project, to add new specifications as well as new features. It was important to redesign everything in a simpler and more optimized way, taking into account AMOB‘s new manufacturing capacity, and so a machine capable of bending Ø323.9×17.5mm tubes was born,” says Diogo Santos, Mechanical Design Engineer at AMOB.

These models are designed for the efficient and precise bending of high-strength materials, very large tubes as well as thick walled tubes. Their rigidity, stability and impressive precision in demanding conditions such as high humidity or harsh temperatures is what makes this tube bending machines and excellent option.

The structure of a machine with the dimensions of the CH 320 is something fundamental that must be carefully studied. With the contribution of the whole team, it has been possible to make this machine more rigid, without exaggerating its total weight. Increased bending torque capacity and higher mandrel extraction force are some of the requirements successfully met in this new hydraulic model.

“One challenge with this type of machine is trying not to forget its real size. We are used to projecting on a 30-inch screen, but it’s essential to keep in mind that the machine could reach a length over 12 meters in reality. Only then we can avoid assembly/handling problems and therefore ensure all safety conditions.” Says Diogo Santos, Mechanical Design Engineer at AMOB.

In the second episode, we can watch a testimonial from the leader of the assembly team, Manuel Martins, and learn about the challenges of handling such large parts. Finally, the third episode features the point of view of the automation team, through Miguel Barbosa, one of the people responsible for automating/”bringing to life” this project – CH 320.
